Chondroitin & Osteoarthritis
Arthritis & Rheumatism’s February issue published results of a chondroitin sulfate study associated with a significant reduction in joint space loss and pain, compared to the placebo group. The researchers were led by Andre Kahan of the University of Paris Descartes in Paris. Chondroitin sulfate is extracted from animal cartilage, such as sharks, but new vegetarian forms are also available. In dietary supplements, the compound is often formulated in combination with glucosamine. Previous studies, including Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), sponsored by the National Institute of Health, have also reported positive results. In this recent study, the participants were randomly assigned to receive 800 mg for 2 years of condroitin sulfate or a placebo. The study included 622 people with osteoarthritis, averaging 62 years old. The results showed that “long-term administration of chondroitin sulfate over 2 years can prevent joint structure degradation in patients with knee osteoarthritis,” wrote Kahan and co-workers.
Both Chondroitin and Glucosamine can be found in Neoflex Caplets and in the Neoflex Joint Powder.
Antioxidants can be found in the Viteyes AREDS formulas, Viteyes® Complete and Viteyes Multivitamin AREDS Companion.
